Discovering Nantucket Island: A Travel Guide by Mary Kate Steele

Nestled like a precious gem off the coast of Massachusetts, Nantucket Island beckons travelers with its timeless, charming streets of its quaint town, the windswept coastal landscapes and the abundance of floral delights like the iconic nantucket rose and all the hydrangeas. This haven of tranquility and beauty offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, inviting visitors to indulge in its rich history, scenic cottages, and unparalleled hospitality. Nantucket is such a special place and one that has become very dear to my heart. I read somewhere that described Nantucket as this, “Nantucket isn’t just a place, it’s a feeling.” (author unknown). That is the perfect way to say it. In this comprehensive travel guide, we'll embark on a journey through Nantucket, uncovering its hidden treasures and guiding you through its enchanting locales. Whether you are visiting for a day or several, this guide offers endless options for everyone and any itinerary.

Best Ways to Travel to Nantucket Island

Before delving into the enchanting experiences awaiting you on Nantucket Island, let's discuss the best ways to reach this idyllic destination. While there's a certain allure to arriving by sea aboard a ferry, Nantucket is also accessible via air travel. The island boasts its own airport, served by several airlines offering flights from Boston, New York, Philadelphia and other major cities. Alternatively, travelers can opt for a scenic ferry ride departing from Hyannis or Harwich Port, reveling in the breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean along the way.

1. Steamship Authority:

The Steamship Authority operates the most frequent ferry service to Nantucket, with departures from Hyannis and Harwich Port on Cape Cod. The traditional ferry service from Hyannis accommodates both passengers and vehicles, offering a seamless travel experience for those bringing cars to the island. Reservations for vehicles are highly recommended, especially during peak travel seasons, to ensure availability and avoid delays. The journey aboard the Steamship Authority's ferry provides ample opportunities to enjoy the scenic views of Nantucket Sound and the island's coastline.

2. Hy-Line Cruises:

Hy-Line Cruises offers high-speed ferry service from Hyannis to Nantucket, providing a faster alternative for travelers seeking a quick and efficient journey. While Hy-Line Cruises primarily caters to foot passengers, they do offer limited space for bicycles and mopeds onboard their vessels. Unlike the Steamship Authority, Hy-Line Cruises does not transport vehicles to Nantucket, so travelers with cars will need to utilize alternative transportation options once they arrive on the island.

Taking a Car to Nantucket Island:

Traveling to Nantucket with a car adds an extra layer of convenience and flexibility, allowing visitors to explore the island at their own pace and access remote areas that may not be easily reachable by public transportation. When bringing a car to Nantucket via ferry, it's essential to make reservations well in advance, particularly during peak travel times, to secure a spot onboard the vessel. Upon arrival on Nantucket, vehicles disembark from the ferry and are free to explore the island's scenic roads and picturesque villages. Keep in mind that parking on Nantucket can be limited, especially in downtown areas and during the busy summer months, so it's advisable to plan accordingly and be mindful of parking regulations.

Every time I have visited, I choose to take the pedestrian ferry. I recommend either renting a car on the island and renting bicycles for in town riding or renting scooters/mopeds as the best way for transportation for a day trip. If you plan to stay several days, you might enjoy bringing a rental on the ferry or renting a car once on Nantucket.
